Impromptu Bathroom Reno Part 3: The End is in sight

Image
We were in the final stretch, there was a light at the end of the tunnel. We now had Drywall Up. So at least we had walls and I could no longer see into my kitchen from the Bathroom. We now needed to mud and tape. After that we could put up the tub surround, paint and finally get our bathroom back. I'm glad I documented the entire thing, it was fun to watch the process after the fact. (It wasn't so much fun during)

The project that we thought we could complete within a week was now dragging out for what seemed like forever. I had all this stuff to get done before my sons party and now we have a giant mess in our apartment. It was so humid that week, the mud was not drying. We even brought in industrial Fans to help with the process, but it was taking forever. I'm very thankful for awesome neighbours, who let us shower at their house while we didn't have a working bathroom (other than a toilet). I had to bath my little guy in the kitchen sink. That was the first time I …

Impromptu Bathroom Reno: Part 2

Image
So here we are it's September and we have hit record temperatures for Heat and Humidity. We are 2 weeks out from my Sons Second Birthday Party, and we literally have holes in our bathroom wall. Our lives were going to be a little bit more chaotic than usual. This unplanned project was going to test our patience.

As there were literally pieces of my bathroom wall scattered on the floor I knew I had to take everything out of the bathroom before we began anything else. You don't realize how much stuff you have until you have to move it somewhere. I couldn't believe that I had that much stuff in such a small space. This created the opportunity to later declutter and purge where necessary. We moved all the bathroom cabinets into our tiny Kitchen, I had laundry baskets and shopping bags filled with anything from toiletries to bathroom decor. I knew it was going to be rough living in an already small space that was made that much smaller by having everything shuffled around.

We go…

Impromptu Bathroom Reno Part 1: The Beginning of a Disaster

Image
Within the last year our life has been a little bit chaotic. Between school, work, kids etc it's been a very busy and trying year. We live in a small 2 bedroom apartment in an old house in a small town. The house is at least 100 years old. So like other Century homes there are bound to be hiccups and repairs to be done.

It was the first week of back to school and my poor neighbour downstairs woke up to water in his apartment. I can tell you this isn't the first time it had happened. Much of the plumbing is old copper pipe and due to the water being so hard out here, the pipes with time will burst and break. It was unfortunate for him that it was a similar section of pipe that had burst and his newly repaired ceiling would need to be replaced again.
I had only just been awake for a few minutes when I heard the unhappy words of my neighbour. I went to see and low and behold there was water on the bathroom floor. I quickly sopped it up and tried to adjust my eyes to see where the…

December Birthday's: Last Minute Party

Image
December is already a busy enough month with Christmas, New Year's and all the other Winter Celebrations that take place. As soon as December 1st hits my calendar is filled with Daily Activities. To name a few we have Breakfast with Santa , Christmas Parties, School functions and to top it off there are quite a few Birthdays in December.

So an already hectic month just got that much busier. I can count at least 16 birthdays in the Month of December and I'm sure I'm missing a few. My Oldest boy's birthday is 3 days after Christmas. So when it comes to celebrating his birthday with friends we either do it at the beginning of December or Early January. We refuse to combine the two. It wasn't his fault that his birthday lands at a terrible time of year for a party.

Usually with Family we celebrate closer to his birthday but it's been difficult now with family members moving in all different directions. I was totally prepared for Christmas, but for the first time ev…

12 Days of Christmas Day 12: The Christmas Pickle

Image
Welcome to the final day of the 12 Days of Christmas, today we are talking about the Christmas Pickle.

My husband is a First Generation Canadian, His Mother's side is from the UK and his Father's Side is from Germany. We honor so many Christmas Traditions from the UK (one's I didn't even realize were from the UK until I started actually doing research) Christmas Crackers, Christmas Pudding, Mince Meat pies, etc., but I wanted to honor more from the German side too, we already did Advent Calendars, so in comes the Christmas Pickle. We jumped on the Christmas Pickle the moment I laid eyes on the Beautiful Glass Decoration in the store. (I love pickles, and dill pickle is one of my favourite flavors, so why wouldn't I naturally love a pickle decoration)

It has been said that the Christmas Pickle had originated in Germany It turns out that today in Modern Germany, most don't know about the Christmas Pickle. They are sold in many places with the legend attached, but t…

12 Days of Christmas Day 11: Holiday Baking

Image
Welcome to the Eleventh Day of the 12 Days of Christmas, today we are talking about one of my favourites, Holiday Baking.

One of my favourite things about the holiday season is all the yummy treats that go with it. I'm usually put in charge of baking some of the treats for the family gatherings. I spend days baking all sorts of delicious treats. I used to start early December and freeze as much as I could, but Hubby and the kids would break into the stash and I would be left with very little left. So now the week before Christmas I start my baking. I spend almost every day for the 7 days leading up to Christmas in my kitchen baking away.

A family favourite is Gingerbread cookies. One year I tried to get all fancy and draw faces and outfits on the cookies, it was tedious and I was beyond frustrated. Now I just drizzle some icing on them and bam, done. I'm no professional cookie decorator that's for sure, but they sure are yummy. I make the gingerbread with my smallest cookie…

12 Days of Christmas Day 10: Christmas Crafting

Image
Welcome to the Tenth day of the 12 Days of Christmas, today we are talking about Christmas Crafting.

Oh what fun it is to do Christmas Crafting. Every year I make crafts at Christmas, not just kid crafts, because those are fun too, but Adult Crafts like handmade Ornaments. I love crafting, I got the gene my Mother who is the Crafting Queen. Pinterest has thousands ideas all at your fingertips. I could spends hours browsing for new ideas. (I don't actually get to spend hours doing it, but I most certainly could). I remember making handmade ornaments in school when I was a kid and my mom would hang them proudly on display. My son started bring home decorations from school too and you better believe I display them proudly throughout the home.

I decided to change my decor this year and had to basically start from scratch. Christmas ornaments and decor are not cheap and will take time to build up a collection. Some decorations that I saw, I loved, but I couldn't justify the money on…

12 Days of Christmas Day 9: Gingerbread Houses

Image
Welcome to the Ninth day of the 12 Days of Christmas, Today we are talking about Gingerbread Houses.

A Gingerbread house to me is a symbol of the Holiday Season. Every year, even before kids I would buy a gingerbread house kit and put it together. My Son's first Christmas we got a Gingerbread house and built it together (though he spent most of his time in the high chair licking the royal icing and decorating the ginger cookies I gave him with Cheerios.

Some years we change it up and buy a different kit, there are so many options to choose from. The best part is, most kits come with everything you need to completely build and decorate a house. In 2013 the year of the Ice Storm many were faced with difficulties after the loss of power  that left people in the dark for days and spoiled food in their fridges just before Christmas.

We went without power for almost 48 hours (we were some of the lucky ones), we were lucky enough that we have amazing neighbours that let us stay with them a…

12 Days of Christmas Day 8: Handmade Gifts

Image
Welcome to the Eighth Day of the 12 Days of Christmas, Today we are talking about Handmade Gifts.

Every Year for Christmas since my first child was born, I have made a handmade gift for the Grandparents and close family. Most times it's something useful, but it's also a keep sake. I love handmade goods. There is something really special about receiving something handmade. Knowing that the person who made it, put all the time and effort into making something for you.
The first five years of doing this incorporated only my first born, these past 3 years I have been able to incorporate both boys. Here is a list and some pictures of the items we have made and given as gifts over the past 8 years.
1. Plaster Hand and foot Cast: These are really great and simple gifts. You can find the plaster cast kits at craft stores and even some dollar stores carry them. My son was not quite a year when I did the casts. I definitely learned a lesson that you need to mix only one at a time, as try…
